A Gatsby Themed Wedding

Have you been bitten by the Gatsby bug? In preparation for seeing the movie in theaters, I spent the day rereading the book, and had forgotten what glorious parties Jay Gatsby threw. Lots of friends of mine have been to Gatsby themed garden parties, so I thought it would be fun to take a look at a Gatsby themed wedding. Here we've got the bridal look, the groom's look, and the jewels. Guests could eat a tiered cake with little flapper-esque edible buttons hanging off the edges, and sip Gatsby cocktails. What do you think? How fun would this be?!

German Market Inspired Wedding

If you've never been to Germany around Christmastime then you're missing out on what it quite possibly the most heart-warming, awe-inspiring phenomenon known as the Christmas Market. Creating a wedding loosely based on the idea of a small town German Christmas Market would be gorgeous. Here's how I'd do it:

-Serve Gluhwein (see above pic). It's a hot mulled red wine that warms the body and will start the dancing!

-Use long wooden tables and benches for seating.

-Have wooden action stations with various German foods.

-Use warm lighting and decorate with crafts like these beautiful paper stars.

-For dessert serve warm cookies and fresh German pastries.

Theme Wedding: Trendy Urban Wedding

One thing is for sure- this is not your mother's wedding. Trendy urban weddings are popping up more and more often. Traditional church wedding this is not, but in its place is a personalized, intimate event that embraces all that is great about city life: haute cuisine, chic venues, impeccable service, and trendy details. Here's what you'll need for a trendy urban wedding:

1. Location, location, location!

Regardless of what city you choose for your nuptials, you'll have your pick of iconic locales. You can't go wrong with a rooftop wedding featuring a fabulous view of the city skyline.

2. On Point Decor

Now that you've bagged a top-notch venue, it's time to focus on decor to set the mood. Minimalism is huge for trendy urban weddings.  No need to do the tall, fluffy centerpieces- opt for something small and understated. Think of your reception like a city lounge/bar. Obviously you will need a dance floor, and tables for dinner. But what else could you do to enhance the setting?

Bring in some lounge furniture. Choose furniture that will encourage guests to mingle and will compliment the progressive, modern, upscale vibe of your day.

3. Colors

While bright colors are all the rage for 2011 spring and summer seasons, we think it's best to choose a neutral color and then accent with a bold statement color. Slate grey is a perfect neutral for an urban wedding. Then, choose a bright color or two like clementine orange, green apple, sunshine yellow or tropical blue. Choose your colors and stick with them throughout- stationary, napkins, drinks & desserts, throw pillows, centerpieces....

4. Personalized Details

For spring and summer weddings, we think a chilled signature cocktail is the perfect way to welcome guests into the big city. Have a non-alcoholic option as well, and use your color palate! Name your drink to add a special touch: Something Blue, Perfect Pear, Mint-to-be.

5. The Dress

Because a trendy urban theme goes against the traditional grain, we suggest choosing something a little different when it comes to your wedding dress. Skip the princess ball gowns, and the fluffy a-lines. Do something a little more unexpected whether that be a short bubble mini, a tea length garden dress or a dramatic mermaid couture gown.

6. Food

One of the benefits of city life is the abundance of delectable food options. A trendy urban themed wedding deserves trendy food- so schedule some tastings and choose unique, beautiful and most importantly, DELICIOUS food that will make your guests' mouths water. Bonus points if some of the apps or desserts match your wedding colors. The curried sweet potato shooters below would be beautiful (and tasty) at a trendy urban wedding.

And remember, you can do a trendy urban wedding anywhere in the world! Ready to start researching the perfect city for your wedding? Check out Montreal, Rio de Janeiro, or Paris!

Theme Wedding: Retro Chic

Not up for the snoozy traditional wedding? Find an unconventional yet classy theme to spice things up for your big day. We love a Retro Chic theme wedding. Here are some ideas to make your retro wedding dreams come true:

1. Birdcage veil. Nothing says retro like a birdcage veil. Simple and sleek, this will set the tone for your vintage themed wedding.

2. Vintage decor. Hunt flea markets for unique pieces that will inspire and add to the retro vibe of your ceremony and reception.

3. Personal details. You can add to the retro theme by honoring your great grandparents or great grandparents. Place their wedding picture next to the table assignments. If you have great penmanship, consider handwriting the table assignments. Or, if you go with the computer, choose a font like calligraphy to create an old world feel. Add to the ambiance by decorating with candlesticks and silver serving trays.

4. Parasols for the bridesmaids. We love these as an alternative to bouquets for your retro wedding.

5. Homemade treat for the guests. Everyone loves a homemade treat!
